Ansible where Terraform and Kubernetes stop

Terraform creates infrastructure, while Kubernetes operators manage resources inside clusters. Neither is ideal for configuring long-lived servers, appliances and the hybrid estate around them.

Inventory that reflects the real estate

Static host lists become wrong as machines are replaced. We build dynamic inventory from AWS EC2, Azure, GCP, VMware, NetBox or another authoritative source. Groups express role, environment, location, operating system and maintenance policy.

Variables are layered deliberately, secrets stay in Ansible Vault, HashiCorp Vault or a cloud secret manager, and privilege escalation is limited to required tasks. Your team can see which systems a playbook will touch before execution.

Reusable roles, not shell scripts

We refactor ad-hoc commands into idempotent roles and versioned collections for OS baselines, SSH, users, NGINX, databases, monitoring agents and backups. Handlers restart services only after changes; templates validate before replacing live files.

Ansible-lint, syntax checks and Molecule scenarios run in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD. Check mode and diff provide another preview, but we verify behaviour because idempotence and check-mode support are not automatic guarantees.

Patching without taking down the fleet

Patching is an orchestration problem, not simply a package upgrade. Playbooks drain a node from HAProxy, NGINX, a cloud load balancer or service pool, verify redundancy, apply updates, reboot when required and wait for health before returning traffic.

The serial strategy controls batch size; maximum-failure rules stop the rollout when a batch behaves unexpectedly. Pre-checks cover disk space, replication and backup status. Post-checks confirm services, ports and monitoring signals. The same pattern supports Linux and Windows maintenance.

AWX and Ansible Automation Platform

When teams need scheduled jobs, approvals and self-service, we implement AWX or Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform. Job templates constrain inventory, credentials and variables; RBAC separates operators from administrators; execution environments pin Ansible, Python and collection versions.
